Ethiopia has one of the lowest health services coverage in the world, at an estimated 61% with wide regional and rural to urban disparities. Seven percent of the national government’s budget is allocated to the health sector for its population of 70 million. Throughout the clinical settings lack of trained healthcare professional staff is a major impediment to optimal patient care and treatment. The ratio of Physicians to population is 1:36,000. The Nurse to population ratio is a mere 1:10000.

Ethiopia is the third most populous country in Africa, with a population of over 70 Million. The population is growing rapidly at rate of 2.7% per annum and it is expected to double in less than 23 years.
Females accounts for about half (35 million) of the total population out of which about 17 million are in the reproductive age group indicating that there is such a large women population who need comprehensive Reproductive Health services. » More |

Background: On October 9, 2003, 11 government and non-governmental organizations, represented by 15 officials met at the downtown City Hall of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss various urban environmental issues and programs. One of the goals of the meeting was to identify specific needs within each agency/organization and strategize on possible methods of meeting the needs. ENHAPA OMFS Team visits Ethiopia once per year with a
primary mission to treat adults and children with facial clefts, maxillofacial
and anatomical temporomandibular joint abnormalities. The team is usually
constituted of craniofacial, ENT, and plastic surgeons and
