FROM GROUNDBREAKING TO BUILDING

Dr. Ingida Asfaw
APRIL 24, 2004
SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND

Members and guests, on behalf of Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association’s Board of Directors and myself, I welcome you to the 3rd Annual ENAHPA Convention. Thank you all for coming. I am pleased to report that in the 4 years since its inception, ENAHPA has made significant strides towards accomplishing a fraction of its mission. The membership is growing. The Ethiopian Diaspora is finally waking up from apathy and deep slumber. ENAHPA’s vision is leading the way towards reversing the “brain drain” and inducing a “brain gain”. Our organization, it’s founding members, and the Board of Directors are providing the impetus and making the path to synergizing the Ethiopian Diaspora both in North America and elsewhere in the globe.

From Groundbreaking to Building, the healthcare and healthcare related infrastructure is beginning to take shape. ENAHPA’s deep commitment, together with that of our Ethiopian based colleagues and the leaders of the nation is making a positive impact for meaningful healthcare access and delivery to the Ethiopian people.

As you are all aware, good health is the key to human well being and the strength of a nation. Ethiopia struggles with the need to provide healthcare for all its citizens and is in dire need of adequate healthcare facilities. Existing hospitals are under-funded, under-staffed, and overcrowded.

The following are chilling statistics:

  • Birth Rate: 44.3 births for every 1000 women
  • Infant Death Rate: 124.57 deaths for every 1000 people
  • Average Life Expectancy: 41.6 years
  • Literacy Rate: 35.5% of the total population
  • Probability of NOT reaching age 40: 43.6%
  • Probability of reaching age 65: 35.5%

In the face of increasing need for health services, adequate delivery has become a major challenge to meet. There is only one hospital for every 1 million Ethiopian citizens. There is only 1 physician for every 150,000 citizens and 1 nurse for every 10,000 citizens. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends one physician per 10,000 citizens, and one nurse per 5000 citizens.

Consistent with ENAHPA’s mission to transfer knowledge, skills and state-of-the-art technology; September 27, 2003 through October 13, 2003 our First Annual Medical/Surgical Mission to Ethiopia. Forty-two healthcare professionals, administrators, and business leaders from 12 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and China participated in this historic medical/surgical mission. Of the 42 delegates 12 were Ethiopians.

      • Anticipate shipping of 54,000 lbs of medical equipment, medical supplies, pharmaceutical supplies and books to Ethiopia by May 15, 2004 for the Mission of 2004.
      • Start implementing the following Rural and Urban Health Initiatives in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Bureau Heads in Ethiopia:

        • Expanded distant learning (telemedicine-already operational)
        • Environmental health
      • ENAHPA is collaborating with African Relief Fund for distribution of Antiretroviral drugs for treatment of HIV/AIDS patients in Ethiopia
      • Private partnership to establish A World-Class Teaching and Training University Hospital (in developmental phase) that will serve Ethiopia, the region and all of Africa.
      • Public/Private Partnership to establish a World-Class Ethiopian-African American University (EAAU) (in developmental phase)

The intent of establishing this premiere institution of higher learning is not to compete with the fine already existing institutions. It is rather, to compliment and to set a benchmark for the delivery of the highest quality education and training in all disciplines and facets of learning. The University will serve Ethiopia, all the regions, the continent of Africa and the rest of the world. EAAU will have the capacity to reverse “Brain Drain” into “Brain Gain” by making it a home base for the Diaspora Ethiopia where they transfer their practical knowledge and skill; applied research and development. Dr. Marvalene Hughes, in her keynote speech, will be discussing this exciting initiative.

Friends, critical challenges lie before us. We must face them head-on because it is our individual and collective duty and sacred obligation to work together in the spirit of ENAHPA’s mission which is to heal the body, mind and spirit and to steward the resources entrusted to us with the people of Ethiopia. We can no longer afford to be oblivious nor remain in a state of lethargy to the difficult challenges facing us. We can no longer afford to sit and watch our children in Ethiopia and Africa who are our future and life line, perish from preventable disease, poverty and hunger, environmental degradation and illiteracy. They feel abandoned and forsaken for no fault of their own. Together we must wage this ugly war in Ethiopia and the rest of Africa past the confines of surviving into the realms of thriving by eradicating hunger, eliminating disease, attacking poverty, combating environmental degradation and promoting peace, security and justice. We must give the Ethiopian people a glimmer of hope. Ethiopia needs and deserves a sustainable massive transfusion of practical knowledge. “Knowing is not enough; we must apply; willing is not enough, we must do” said Goethe. The statement was made that “Ethiopia cannot afford to walk nor run, it must fly”. We must think big, and think within the confines of reality and our ability to deliver. Most of all, we must have a genuine interest, a deep passion, an abiding commitment and love coupled with ENAHPA’s core values of respect, social justice, compassion and excellence.

Whatever your profession or chosen career, there is a role for you be it large or small. Our diversity will give us the collective strength, confidence and unity to continue to be a dynamic, action oriented organization. We must pledge the wisdom of our elderly and the energy of our young and leave behind an irrevocable legacy for the future generation. The door is ajar to each and every one of you if you choose to enter and give to this noble humanitarian cause for “the measure you give is the measure you get back”. The aircraft is departing the station and don’t let it leave you behind if you wish to fly and seize the opportunity. Know that ENAHPA clearly has no alignment nor any concerns with the political process, racial nor ethnic preference, color, creed or religion. It is simply about a benevolent, a non-profit organization that is committed to sharing its resources with those less fortunate.

ENAHPA is not the only organization of its kind in which committed members are working for the good of the Ethiopian people. There are many Ethiopian and Ethiopian related visionary humanitarian organizations based in North America and elsewhere in the World. Each one, in its own right has made significant contributions in helping to alleviate the dire needs of the people of Ethiopia. We are proud of their efforts and sacrifice.

Although the various organization’s emphases and focuses are on specific areas of interest and need, ENAHPA’s mission and vision is broader in its scope and objectives and therefore, will certainly compliment the network of the Diaspora Ethiopia. ENAHPA gladly welcomes the opportunity to collaborate, connect and network with all our shinning sister organizations both in North America and elsewhere in the World. ENAHPA’s ultimate objective and hope is to create unity and solidarity of all Ethiopian and Ethiopian related organizations, no matter what field of interest or specialty under one umbrella for effective, positively impactful, sustainable and unfragmented access and delivery of all diversified service lines. It is committed to serve as a catalyst to the socioeconomic development, growth and well-being and thus help Ethiopia attain a full membership into the 21st century global society.

Clearly, in order to implement all these needed services, ENAHPA seeks monetary resources. When applying for grants to corporate sponsors and foundations, the most frequent question asked is “How much money has the membership contributed, so that the corporate sponsors can match it?” If we are serious and committed, as I hope we all are, then ENAHPA solicits your generous contributions in order to implement its proposed programs and projects.

Finally, the need is enormous and the problems are truly overwhelming. The motherland is calling for each and every one of you not to abandon her, but to uphold her, to remember her and to give her a helping hand. The sons, daughters and friends of Ethiopia must rise to the occasion both individually and collectively to save the children for assuredly they are Ethiopia’s future and its life-line.

We can overcome the challenges that loom before us and create a bright future for the Ethiopian people through the collective efforts of ENAHPA, the Diaspora Ethiopia, and friends of Ethiopia becoming an instrument in the capacity building of healthcare and health related services and create health, socioeconomic renaissance and well-being so vital to the nation. Let us take courage in saving the cradle of humanity where our most ancient grandmother lived. In the final anlaysis, history will be the judge. Truly, “If you can dream it, you can see it, and if you can see it, you can do it.”

Our gratitude goes to all our partners: companies, corporations, organizations, hospitals, churches, social clubs and individuals in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the world for their generosity in donating and/or lending medical equipment, medical supplies, pharmaceutical supplies, books and monetary contributions to the medical/surgical mission that were so vital to its success. A special thank you to the delegation, leaders of the Ethiopian Government. Sheik Mohammad Hussien Al Amoudi, Ethiopian Knowledge and Technology Transfer (EKTTS), Ethiopian Airlines, Dr. Abubaker Bedri, Dean Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University, Dr. Kebede Oli, Faculty of Medicine Addis Ababa University who tirelessly and flawlessly organized the mission on the Ethiopian side while on his sabbatical, along with Dr. Bekele Alemayehu, Dr. Mengistu Alemayehu, and Dr. Milliard Derbew and Dr. Gulilat Dereje.

As always, remember ENAHPA’s motto: “Together We Can Make a Difference”.
